Trash Collection Changes Effective March 1st, 2023

As of January 1 st, 2023 the Borough of Brielle has entered into a new contract for the provision of trash collection services.

Due to increased cost and the fact that trash collection is a "In Cap" service, which means it is subject to the 2% increase permitted by state statute, the Mayor & Council have determined that the most cost effective means of dealing with the increase cost is to accept the bid for curb-side collection of trash.

This change shall take effect on March 1 st, 2023. The change shall require all residents to place their trash containers at the curb on the scheduled collection day. The Mayor & Council believe that this is a fair approach to the issue of increased cost and it will help contain any adverse impact on the residential taxpayer.

Since New Jersey State Statute does not mandate a municipality to collect trash, the NJDEP Guidelines are somewhat flexible and it is therefore permissible for any resident who wishes to continue backyard collection to do so by contacting the provider of the service Suburban Disposal at: https://www.suburbandisposalinc.com/brielle or (973)227-7020 option 1. Plan options will appear and residents can choose the plan that works best for them. There is a cost for this service and residents who utilize this additional service shall be direct billed for the added cost based on the plan that they select.

Another change in the new contract is the consolidation of collection routes. Trash shall now be collected on Monday and Thursday of each week.

The list of streets will tell you if your collection is on Monday or Thursday, but as a general rule, the Monday and Tuesday routes will now be done on Monday and the Thursday and Friday routes on Thursday. There are some minor modifications so it is advisable to review the street list to be sure that you place your trash out on the right day.

The Mayor and Council recognize that this is a major change for our residents, but we have two months (January and February) to prepare, and we trust that any inconvenience will be offset by the overall cost savings.

Please note that the street list was formulated by the Contract Vendor. If your specific street does not appear on the list please contact Borough Hall at townhall@brielleboro.com. If you are on Osprey Point Drive, a noted exception, your collection day is Thursday.
